Chilton Memorial Hospital's goal is to provide you with top-notch surgical services as well as a caring and supportive environment in which to prepare, undergo and recover from your procedure.

In general, the entire process — from first inquiry into weight-loss surgery to the day of surgery — takes approximately two months. Everyone's experience varies, but the typical steps for weight-loss surgery patients are
  1. Meet with the bariatric surgeon to discuss whether weight-loss surgery is right for you.
  2. Receive a nutritional evaluation.
  3. Attend a support group meeting.
  4. Receive a psychological evaluation.
  5. Submit nutritional and psychological evaluations and a cover letter according to the requirements of your health insurance company to obtain authorization for surgery.
  6. Receive health insurance authorization for surgery.
  7. Check in to Chilton Hospital to be admitted for surgery.
  8. Undergo weight-loss surgery.
  9. Remain as an inpatient for two days.
  10. Follow a postoperative diet of clear liquids for 10-14 days after surgery.
  11. Graduate to a pureed food diet for 6-8 weeks.
  12. Reintroduce regular foods slowly.
  13. Begin to lose approximately 75 percent of your excess weight after surgery.
  14. Receive follow-up plastic surgery, if necessary or desired.
  15. Enjoy your newfound energy and lifestyle.
